Returning to Basics ... But Different

How often have we said, "I'm starting over" or "I'm returning to the beginning?" I can't begin to count how many times I have uttered one of those phrases. But there is no shame in starting over or returning to basics. It is necessary in the development process. Suppose someone continues to use antiquated processes, mindsets, and tools over what is available today. In that case, they will frustrate those around them or get lost in the sea of explorers and innovators. We must choose to think, "There has to be a better way."

During recent weeks, I have observed a discernible shift in the atmosphere surrounding me, indicating an impending change. While many might attribute this shift to current events such as the election, I perceive a deeper and more profound transformation taking place. To me, this change signifies a return to fundamental truths, inherent God-given talents, and long-neglected aspirations. This return journey is not merely a repetition of past experiences; I have evolved since my last introspection into my core identity. Revisiting the foundational aspects of my being is not intended as a negative endeavor, nor is it meant to resurface painful recollections. Rather, it serves as a realignment with guiding principles to assess my progress, recalibrate my direction, and measure personal growth. Throughout my life's journey, I have encountered and surmounted significant challenges, celebrated victories, endured losses, acquired knowledge, undergone emotional healing, addressed health issues, and navigated interpersonal conflicts. Yet, at each juncture, I have consistently retraced my steps back to the basics. And thus, here we stand once more.

As I delve into Heather E. McGowan's book "The Empathy Advantage," I am actively reevaluating my perspective on the world and, more significantly, on work processes. McGowan eloquently illuminates generational attitudes towards community and work-life in our rapidly evolving landscape of leadership, life balance, and motivations. By recognizing the profound transformations that were already underway pre-pandemic and have since been expedited, I am gaining invaluable insights on how to not just adapt but thrive as a more impactful leader. Embracing a back-to-basics approach is my initial step towards reshaping my mindset to better serve others and lead my community with confidence. I am shedding outdated ideologies and biases towards individuals in the workforce who bring diverse life experiences to the table. It is possible to uphold core principles while extending empathy and fostering more effective collaboration on projects.

Have you ever witnessed those amazing videos showcasing a college student being handed a rotary telephone or a cassette walkman? It's mind-blowing to see how their life experiences haven't equipped them with the skills to operate these nostalgic items that were once a part of our daily lives. To us, it's second nature to dial numbers or hit play on a cassette player, but for these students, they're on the hunt for Bluetooth, speakers, or wireless features! They've grown up in a world where these modern conveniences are the norm, leaving them without a roadmap. Now, let's shift our perspective to their view of the workforce and community. What obstacles have we unintentionally set in their way, expecting them to excel without a manual? Are we shutting down their innovative ideas simply because they don't align with our traditional methods? Let's embrace their fresh approaches and pave the way for a brighter future!

Embracing collaboration is an integral aspect of my personal and professional character. I prioritize teamwork over individual efforts, recognizing the value it brings in terms of enhanced enjoyment, knowledge sharing, and fostering creativity. Through collaborative endeavors, I have gained profound insights into various aspects of my life, career, skill repertoire, and personal growth, contributing to a deeper understanding of my capabilities. This collaborative journey has not only unearthed latent talents within me but also propelled me to my current position, all while staying true to my core values. Nevertheless, I remain committed to continuous learning and development, acknowledging that there is always room for further enhancement and expansion.

I frequently use a saying in my conversations: "I have been placed in a room I know I don't belong." This doesn't imply any illegal infiltration; rather, it signifies being positioned by others among individuals with superior knowledge, skills, and understanding. Despite often feeling like an imposter, I recognize I am here for a reason. I can either embrace the chance to learn and evolve or retreat and be labeled as an imposter. Embracing challenges, I consistently seize opportunities for growth. While people may attempt to label me, I have the power to reject or accept their perceptions. I unequivocally choose to never accept a label that does not align with my true identity. Period.

Embracing my roots means dedicating ample time at my keyboard to unleash the creativity that springs from within, delving into profound development topics rather than sticking to light romantic reads, engaging with fellow travelers to absorb their narratives, and cherishing my past while wholeheartedly appreciating my present.

At this time of year, reflection is key. We find ourselves in the final quarter of the year amidst the season of Thanksgiving (according to the US calendar) and busy planning family holiday gatherings. It's an ideal moment to assess our goals and achievements of the year so far and to strategize for the remaining weeks. Let's seize this opportunity to drive positive changes and prevent negativity from hindering our productivity. Today, let's commit to consistently opting for life, joy, and peace. Why not include a touch of empathy, too?
